The Argument from the Improbable Self

The Argument from the Improbable Self

Así termina el primer capítulo, "The Argument from the Improbable Self":

Here it is, then: the sense that existence is just such a tremendous thing, one comes into it, astonishingly, here one is formed by biology and history, genes and culture, in the midst of the contingency of the world, here one is, one doesn't know how, one doesn't know why, and suddenly one doesn't know where one is either or who or what one is either, and all that one knows is that one is a part of it, a considered and conscious part of it, generated and sustained in existence in ways one can hardly comprehend, all the time conscious of it, though, of existence, the fullness of it, the reaching expanse and pulsing intricacy of it, and one wants to live in a way that at least begins to do justice to it, one wants to expand one's reach of it as far as expansion is possible and even beyond that, to live one's life in a way commensurate with the privilege of being a part of and conscious of the whole reeling glorious infinite sweep, a sweep that includes, so improbably, a psychologist of religion named Cass Seltzer, who, moved by powers beyond himself, did something more improbable than all the improbabilites constituting his improbable existence could have entailed, did something that won him someone else's life, a better life, a more brilliant life, a life beyond all the ones he had wished for in the pounding obscurity of all his yearnings, because all of this, this, this, THIS couldn't belong to him, to the man who stands on Weeks Bridge, wrapped round in a scarf his once-beloved ex-wife Pascale had knit for him for some necessary reason that he would never know, perhaps to offer him some protection against the desolation she knew would soon be his, and was, but is no longer, suspended here above sublimity, his cheeks aflame with either euphoria or frostbite, a letter in his zippered pocket with the imprimatur of Veritas and a Lucinda Mandelbaum with whom to share it all.

Sartre, Lacan, Nabokov

Sartre, Lacan, Nabokov

SARTRE, LACAN, AND NABOKOV

In order to explore the relationship between Nabokov and  French thought, I propose to proceed in two parts. In a first part, I would like to study the contents and significance of what two main leading French modern philosophers, such as Sartre and Lacan, wrote on Nabokov's works. As regards Sartre, I will prolong D. Barton Johnson's thorough article entitled "The Nabokov-Sartre controversy " and published in Nabokov Studies (Volume 1, 1994) where he recalls Sartre's commentary on Despair and Nabokov's reaction to and dismissal of Sartre. As for Lacan, I will analyse his commentary on Lolita in the document owned by "L'association freudienne internationale" and which corresponds to Lesson 26 (dated June 24, 1959) of the 1958-1959 seminar entitled "Le désir et son interpretation" where Lacan opposes the neurotic structure of Humbert's desire to the perverse one of Quilty.

In a second part of the paper, I would like to prolong my reflexions on the relationship between Nabokov and French philosopher Jacques Derrida that I exposed in an article published in 2003 in The Oxford Literary Review where I analysed the epistemological proximity of Derrida's and Nabokov'srepresentation of reality. Indeed, although Derrida never wrote on Nabokov – though he told me he had read Lolita and was pleased to be associated to Nabokov- , it is possible to resort to deconstruction and a great number of Derrida's concepts to indulge in a fruitful literary criticism of Nabokov's works.

I will conclude by wondering why French thought and French philosophers have been useful in the interpretation of Nabokov's works. And last but not least, to what extent can Nabokov be considered himself as a thinker?

It's Stories Still

domingo, 17 de agosto de 2014

Encontrado en Dialnet:

"It's stories still":  la reflexividad en las narraciones de Samuel Beckett

  • Autores: José Angel García Landa
  • Localización: Revista alicantina de estudios ingleses, ISSN 0214-4808, Nº. 5, 1992 , págs. 57-81
  • Resumen
    • This paper explores the use of reflexive and metafictional narrative structures in The Unnamable and other texts by Samuel Beckett. Reflexivity is shown to be the structural basis at all textual levels, from the articulation of character and plot development, through the use of narrative voice and modality, to the implied authorial level and the aesthetic stance of the text. Narratology and deconstruction are used as analytical tools to explore the peculiar semiotic productivity of the Beckettian text and draw the aesthetic and philosophical implications of Beckett's use of narrative form.
