Writer Pops Out of Text

A veces estás leyendo un autor y resalta vívidamente sobre la página, por alguna cualidad de estilo o de voz, o de algo dicho de una manera que conecta con tus propias ideas. A veces eso me motiva para escribir, y hace unos meses escribí en el blog un artículo, "Tiempo Congelado", donde retomaba o comentaba unas ideas de Lidia Vianu, una anglista rumana que escribía sobre literatura modernista en el European English Messenger. Ayer precisamente me estaba leyendo otro artículo de la misma autora en el siguiente número de la misma revista, el European English Messenger, cuando me encuentro al mirar el ordenador con que me escribe precisamente ella, la que me estaba leyendo—esto ya es casualidad, eh... que había dado con mi comentario anterior sobre su artículo. Así que hemos estado intercambiando ideas y especulaciones—muchas tiene ella, es una máquina de ideas y sugerencias, muy activa y dinámica, todo un caso de escritora a la que estabas leyendo tranquilamente y va y se pone a hablar contigo ya desde la página.

Internet tiene estas cosas—más bien estas posibilidades, porque estamos muchos a un golpe de clic en el mundo, pero pocos lo aprovechan realmente el enorme potencial comunicativo que tiene la red. De esto hablaba hoy con un estudiante—cómo la red está infrautilizada en sus posibilidades, y cómo de hecho muchas veces en la Universidad se le da la espalda deliberadamente, en concreto en nuestro centro pasa mucho. Me decía el estudiante que en otros centros utilizan sistemáticamente la web como apoyo—en el nuestro, bien poquito. Lidia Vianu está muy interesada en cómo nos vamos adaptando a esta nueva ecología mediática y le sacamos partido (me parece que me ve un poco como un case study in point).

Vianu dirige en la Universidad de Bucarest un máster de traducción inglesa y una editorial en red asociada. Y lo de hablar con los autores en directo parece que también le va—quí hay un libro suyo de entrevistas con escritores contemporáneos, Desperado Essay-Interviews. Incluye entrevistas con Danny Abse, Peter Ackroyd, R. V. Bailey, Julian Barnes, Jean Bleakney, Alan Brownjohn, Catherine Byron, Andrei Codrescu, Julia Copus, Peter Dale, Michael Donaghy, Maura Dooley, Nick Drake, Ian Duhig, Ruth Fainlight, U. A. The author of this page, Robert de Beaugrande, died in 2008. The following obituary was published in the Linguist List (30 June 2008):

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am sorry to pass on the news of the death several days ago of Robert deBeaugrande, a good friend and an outstanding linguist who contributed much to the inception of text and discourse analysis and to critical discourse linguistics.

Robert helped to develop what was known at one time as the Vienna School of Textlinguistik, and also to some early work on cognitive linguistics. In his later work, he contributed to what we now call Critical Discourse Analysis, and wrote many insightful and incisive analyses of politically charged texts and issues, combining methods of functional linguistics with the emerging techniques of computer-based corpus analysis.

Robert had a flamboyant personal style and a strong commitment to progressive politics. He worked in and supported students in several developing African nations, in Asia, the mid-East, and Brazil, as well as having a prestigious appointment for several years at the University of Vienna.

In semi-retirement, he devoted himself to producing a website with full text of many of his classic and newer publications, making it a treasure house of information especially for those around the world who cannot afford the exorbitant prices of academic books today.

It seems that Robert de Beaugrande went through personal hardship and anguish in his late years. It is unfortunate that such a remarkable scholar should disappear in silence after such outstanding academic work, activity and influence. His works remain: they have been influential on many people, and the author’s generosity in making them available free of charge on the web can only be praised. Robert de Beaugrande was a pioneer in many ways, and also in promoting this use of the Internet to counteract some sclerotic trends in academic publishing.

Descanse en paz. Un saludo, Robert, through the time-warp of language—and thanks.
