Academia impact report

Dear Matt:

Re: the prospective impact report tool in Academia. Thanks for including me in the list of potential beta users. I think an impact report service is an excellent idea, and no doubt I would use it in my CV; it sounds like a great way of making stats manageable. Besides this I don't know how I could contribute anything to the new tool, and I'm pathologically shy about talking on the phone or Skype and I'm no use there, but if you have any specific questions by all means email them to me and I'll answer them as best I can; I'd be glad to do so because I am extremely happy with Academia; it's an admirable venture and it provides an invaluable service that should be widely recognized. Why academic institutions do not more actively support it, and actually tend to actively ignore it absolutely beats me... or perhaps it doesn't; the academy tends to stick to its protocols to an unreasonable extent.
Best regards,
JaGL

So, Jill, you’ve felt the shiver of what I like to call the "Apocalypse of Total Communication"? Have a look at this, another shiverer:
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age." (Opening words of H. P. Lovecraft’s "The Call of Cthulhu", 1926)

Andrew Orlovsky, "Wikipedia Founder Admits to Serious Quality Problems ", The Register 18 Oct. 2005.

The term cybernetics stems from the Greek kybernétes [translitero translitero y me salto los enlaces] meaning steersman, governor, pilot, or rudder; the same root as government). Cybernetics is the discipline that studies communication and control in living beings or machines".

Decía Hari Kunzru que "cybernetics has left two important cultural residues behind. The first is its picture of the world as a collection of networks. The second is its intuition that there’s not as much clear blue water between people and machines as some would like to believe" (Bueno, es una idea con la que jugaba Descartes, aunque luego trucaba la máquina con the ghost in the machine).

Y red quiere decir comunicación.... y Control. Under the Net.
