Un artículo sobre lenguaje y realidad virtual. Vivimos en Matrix, la Matrix del cerebro colectivo, ya sea que nos movamos por la ciudad o que meditemos offline en la oscuridad. La realidad, pasada por el lenguaje (y por la cultura humana) es Realidad Aumentada, o Realidad Virtual. Este artículo examina el concepto de la realidad humana en tanto que entorno virtual generado por el cerebro. Debido a la historia evolutiva del cerebro humano, a su estructuración peculiar, y a la coevolución del cerebro y de la cognición simultáneas con el desarrollo del lenguaje, nuestro entorno está conformado en gran medida mediante estructuras cognitivas y lingüísticas culturalmente adquiridas. Las teorías de Deacon a este respecto se discuten en relación a las de otras contribuciones recientes (Kenneally, Bickerton, Jaynes, Chomsky).
The Cavern in the Brain: Language as Virtual Reality
This paper discusses the notion of human reality as a virtual environment generated by the brain. Due to the human brain's structure, its evolutionary history, and the simultaneous co-evolution of the human brain and cognition with the development of language, our environment is shaped to a great degree by culturally acquired cognition and linguistic structures. Deacon's theories in this respect are discussed in relation to other current contributions (Kenneally, Bickerton, Jaynes, Chomsky).

20ª edición de la Bibliografía
Veinte años llevo esperando este momento: la publicación de la vigésima edición de mi Bibliografía. La Biblio, la llamo yo en casa. Y cierto que ocupa la extensión de varias Biblias—unas 70 Biblias, calculo, en texto sin dorados ni Dorés.
Hace veinte años es cuando la colgué en Internet, siempre en libre acceso, por primera vez; pero ya llevaba entonces trabajo hecho. Había empezado a recoger referencias hacia 1984, y a organizarlas en los primeros Macs allá por 1988. Hace diez años publicaron una edición en el Oxford Text Archive; pero ha seguido creciendo. Hace quince años tenía más o menos esta extensión:
Bueno, más o menos no—porque sólo está aquí la mitad de lo que tenía. La imprimí entonces, sólo a medias, para presentarla a unas oposiciones (entre otras publicaciones, claro), y se me partió el carrito donde la llevaba. En fin, de todos modos me suspendieron y declararon la plaza desierta; este trabajo no se aprecia fácilmente.

No es completa, la Bibliografía, no. Bueno, ninguna lo es. Pero sí hace algo que no hacen otras: se incluye a sí misma entre las referencias, en la sección Bibliografías. Por qué no. Y hasta incluye esta pequeña selección de comentarios sobre sí misma, no diré que comentarios críticos, pues aunque me enlazan en numerosos sitios, hasta ahora sólo la he reseñado yo:

Me gusta presumir modestamente, o molestamente, de que la Biblio es el LIBRO DE LOS LIBROS, el Libro Más Gordo jamás escrito por humano alguno. Es discutible tanto la afirmación como su oportunidad. Citaré al respecto a George Herbert Mead, en Mind, Self, and Society, a cuenta del sentido ritual de la propia identidad (Mind the self!)
We do belong to the community and our self-respect depends on our recognition of ourselves as such self-respecting individuals. But that is not enough for us, since we want to recognize ourselves in our differences from other persons. We have, of course, a specific economic and social status that enables us to so distinguish ourselves. We also have to some extent positions in various groups which give a means of self-identification, but there is back of all these matters a sense of things which on the whole we do better than other people do. It is very interesting to get back to these superiorities, many of them of a very trivial character, but of great importance to us. We may come back to manners of speech and dress, to a capacity for remembering, to this, that, and the other thing—but always to something in which we stand out above people. We are careful, of course, not directly to plume ourselves. It would seem childish to intimate that we take satisfaction in showing that we can do something better than others. We take a great deal of pains to cover up such a situation; but actually we are vastly gratified. Among children and among primitive communities these superiorities are vaunted and a person glories in them; but even among our more advanced groups they are there as essential ways of realizing one's self, and they are not to be identified with what we term the expression of the egoistic or self-centered person. A person may be as genuine as you like in matters of dollars and cents or efforts, and he may be genuine in recognizing other people's successes and enjoy them, but that does not keep him from enjoying his own abilities and getting peculiar satisfaction out of his own successes.
